CP Foods vows to protect biodiversity and reduce plastic waste

Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods) a pledge to preserve biodiversity, reducing environmental footprint from its operations through partnerships with government, civil society and communities across Thailand.

As concern on global warming and plastic waste crisis, the company announced last year its sustainable packaging policy to reduce the plastic footprint from its business worldwide.

Mr.Wuthichai Sithipreedanant, Senior Vice President – Social Responsibility and Sustainability Development of CP Foods, said CP Foods is committed to operating business on the basis of reducing environmental impacts, and promoting the conservation of natural resources throughout the value chain in line with circular economy principle.

He added that it is vital for the agricultural and food industry to work together to preserve and restore natural resources. The objective is to meet a sustainable manufacturing.

The company has partnered up with the public and civil society sectors to conserve and restore natural resources within and outside the boundaries of its plants, farms, and at other important strategic areas across Thailand.

In addition, the company cultivates its employees to maximize the use of natural resources.

“We make a significant progress. So far, we restored over 1,613 hectares of mangrove forest and watershed forest within the boundary of our operations. The projects also encourages community to live with nature.” Mr.Wuthichai announced.

The company’s “Rak Ni-Ves, Pasak Watershed, Khao Phraya Doen Tong”, a reforestation project, continued to grow plants and conduct engagement activities, including by constructing weirs to continuously humidify in the forest area, building a firebreak, reforesting the forest, and removing weeds to allow natural plant reproduction, on an the area of more than 955 hectares. As a result of this practice, the average survival rate of newly planted trees was at the outstanding rate of 90%.

Furthermore, CP Foods collaborated with Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University to study the biodiversity in project area. The study results will be used as a baseline data for comparing to the change of biodiversity in the project area.

Currently, 9 species of mammals, 119 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles and 15 species of amphibians were found within the area of the project.

Moreover, The company’s Grow-Share-Protect has target to increase the mangroves in five strategic locations across the country, including in areas that are near operations, in Samut Sakhon, Rayong, Chumphon, Phang Nga, and Songkhla provinces, covering area of 382  hectares.

The company also encourages employees to create green areas within its farms and operations, resulting 275 hectares.

Besides environmental conservation activities, the company also launched Sustainable Packaging Policy and Principle to develop sustainable packaging design and management based on the concept of Circular Economy throughout the value chain.

The company has made a promise that 100% of plastic packaging will be reusable or recyclable or upcyclable or compostable in Thailand operations within 2025 and 2030 for overseas operations.

The approach is intended to optimize resources used in the production of packaging, reduce packaging waste, and to promote the use of environmentally friendly packaging materials.

To achieve the goal, CP Foods has developed eco-friendly packages such as plant-based bioplastic trays made from natural renewable resources, namely Polylactic Acid (PLA), which is compostable. In 2015, it was the first company in Thailand to use such trays in chilled raw chicken and pork products.
