CPF encourages contract farmers to adopt high standard labour practices

Bangkok (18 September 2018) -- Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) succeeded to implement the Good Labour Practices – Poultry Thailand (GLP- Poultry Thailand) through its broiler contracted farms across Thailand which ensures slavery-free status in the company’s broiler supply chain.

To ensure transparent supply chain, the company encourages its contract farmers to apply for Thailand Labour Standard, which is on par with the other internationally recognized standards for labour managements.

CPF stresses the standard will significantly improves quality of life for those who work in its supply chain. It will guarantee that they are treated fairly under the globally recognized practices.

The company has encouraged its contract farmers to comply with Good Labour Practices – Poultry Thailand since last year. These farms were already audited by trained CPF employees this year.

Mr. Parisotat Punnabhum, CPFs' Executive Vice President of Human Resources, explained that the audit team had been trained by Labour Standard Development Bureau to audit the contract farm nationwide. The team also advise farmers to well apply the practices through the transition, ensuring an effective compliance of GLP standard.

He said Thailand currently places a great importance on labour practice and human rights. As a result, GLP standard now included in Thai Agricultural Standard for Good Agriculture Practices for broiler farms (GAP).

“Eighty percent of the broiler contract farms were audited by CPF’s staffs during the first nine months of this year. The assessment showed that most of the farms are able to comply with GLP standard,” Mr. Parisotat said, adding that the company’s next step is to help those farmers to apply for Thailand Labour Standard (TLS) 8001-2010 from Department of Labour Protection and Welfare.

The certified farms will set a new height for poultry business in terms of labour management as well as traceability. With a TLS standard, consumers will be convinced that the labour who work in the supply chain are treated with a high human rights standard.

Mr. Parisotat added that 76 out of 100 company-owned broiler farms are certified TLS 8001-2010. The remaining farms are in certification process, which expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2019.

CPF plans to extend the successful implementation of GLP in poultry business to overseas operations. This is to ensure the company has delivered single standard of product quality to consumer worldwide.
