Cambodia lauds CPF’s migrant labor-related practices

Chachoengsao - Mr. Hun Many, Member of National Assembly of Cambodia, and Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Long Visalo lauded Thailand’s private sector for its migrant labor recruitment and treatment practices. During their visit to Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC (CPF)’s pork processing plant in the province, they were pleased with the international-standard practices and vowed cooperation to complete the registration of all Cambodian workers in Thailand by the end of October.

Mr. Hun Many and Mr. Long Visalo were accompanied by members of the National Assembly of Cambodia and government officials. During the visit, they met over 500 Cambodian workers at CPF’s pork processing plant. They were pleased with CPF’s care extended to the workers and thanked CPF for the equal treatment of Thai and Cambodian workers which is in line with international human rights practices. They extended supports to Thailand’s migrant labor policy, vowing to help complete the registration of all Cambodian workers for the benefits of people in both countries.

Mr. Hun Many said that the visit was the government’s mission in monitoring the living condition of Cambodians working overseas, to ensure that they are treated accordingly to laws and human rights practices. Labor recruitment has been the focus of both the governments of Thailand and Cambodia and they have forged cooperation to ensure legal recruitment. Cambodia has also established a working committee to ensure all Cambodian workers in Thailand accurately and completely registered and all witnessing safe work environment and a good quality of life.

“That Cambodian workers in Thailand enjoy a good quality of life is an achievement deriving from the cooperation of all parties, from the governments to the private sector. CPF is a model of leading companies in Thailand which helps provide secure jobs to Cambodian workers, which will be the foundation of solid and sustainable social and economic growth of both countries in the long run,” Mr. Hun Many said.

Mrs. Pha Linda, a Cambodian worker, was pleased with the Cambodian government’s concerns about workers overseas. During the visit, she briefed Mr. Hun Many about the living condition, expecting him to tell her relatives in Cambodia that she is well and contented.

Mr. Nithiwat Jirayuthanyawat, Vice President of CPF's pork processing plant in Chachoengsao province said that workers from neighboring countries particularly Cambodia have played an important part in CPF’s safe food production process. CPF’s policy is to employ migrant labors as employees through a transparent recruitment process. It has followed the memorandum of understanding on recruitment signed between Thailand and neighboring countries. At CPF’s pork processing plant in Chachoengsao, Cambodian workers account for over 800 from a total of 1,500 workers. CPF has also upheld the international human rights practices. Recently, Cambodia’s Labour and Vocational Training Ministry awarded the plant a certificate, lauding it for the exemplary recruitment and treatment of migrant workers.

“CPF is deeply delighted with the Cambodian government’s concerns about the quality of life of Cambodian workers in Thailand. The visit of Mr. Hun Many and the Ambassador to Thailand will boost confidence in CPF’s migrant labor recruitment and treatment practices among Cambodia’s government and its citizens as well as the international community,” Nithiwat said.
