CP Foods promotes innovations and advanced technologies to bolster water-use efficiency

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) continue to drive its sustainability goals on water resource management by using modern technologies and innovations to increase water use efficiency. This results in a significant reduction in water use per unit of production.

Peerapong Krinchai, Executive Vice President – Corporate Engineering and Chairperson of the Working Group on Climate Change Management Water and Waste of CP Foods, said, the company has placed great importance to water management in line with the circular economy and the 3Rs principle, which is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

In 2020, the company can reduce the amount of water used per production unit by up to 36% compared to the base year 2015 and the amount of reuse and recycle water was at 42 % of the total amount of water used.

“CP Foods is taking into account the efficient use of water resources and reduce the amount of wastewater that will occur. This includes the design of the wastewater treatment system to be able to recycle treated water and manage water resources in a sustainable way," said Mr. Peerapong.

CP has applied Air Chiller in replace of Water Chiller technology in the chicken processing plant. The new technology can reduce water usage by more than 426,000 cubic meters per year. Moreover, the company has been optimizing water use in various production processes. For example, Minburi chicken processing plant enable to reduce water usage by 240,000 cubic meters per year thanks to improvement in cooling system and equipment cleaning process.

Ultrafiltration is being used to filter treated water and improve quality, resulting in clean water circulating back to the activities, such as cleaning tools and equipment. Meanwhile, a reverse osmosis is applied to the cooling system in the Korat chicken meat processing plant. These technologies can reduce the external water draw by more than 720,000 cubic meters per year. In the aquaculture business, RAS is used to circulate the water used in shrimp farms.

Treated wastewater is recycled by the Company for non-production activities , such as watering plants, cleaning roads, and cleaning animal housings, etc.

In 2020, CP Foods received a performance evaluation under the framework of a world-renowned sustainability assessment institute by CDP, including CDP Climate, CDP Water and CDP Forest, reflecting transparent disclosures for sustainable business operations. It helps to promote the credibility of the company to investors and stakeholders.

Mr. Peerapong added that the Company also participates in conservation and restoration of the Pa Sak watershed forest, a strategic area for agriculture industry in Lopburi and nearby provinces, covering 6,971 rai, via CPF Rak Ni-Ves, Pasak Watershed, Khao Phraya Doen Thong Project.
