CP Foods supports children in the Ah Yone Oo Learning Centre with layer raising project

Covid-19 epidemic situation Is a warning sign of the importance of "Food security", which is proven to be a crucial factor for all people across the globe. As for Thailand, the country has sufficient food supplies that are clean, safe, of good quality. Thailand’s food security is a result from the collaboration of both the public and private sectors.

“Raising Layer for Student's Lunch” Project is among many of the food security projects supported by the private sector. The purpose of this campaign aims at providing children and youth nationwide with opportunities to access quality protein.

Founded in 1989, the school lunch program is a joint effort by CP Foods, Charoen Pokphand Foundation for Rural Life Development, Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), the Border Patrol Police Headquarters, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce - Bangkok (JCCB) and Siam Makro Public Company Limited to provide children and youth, who are a future of the country, with good nutrition. As of now (2020), “Raising Layer for Student's Lunch” Project is celebrating its 31st year, covering 855 schools.

One of the schools that joined the project is Ah Yone Oo Learning Centre in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, just right next to the Myanmar border. It was established in 2005 Mae Sot District, Tak Province, to be a learning centre for migrant children. There are 110 students, 7 teachers, all of them are from Myanmar. The classes available from child center to Grade 7, using Burmese curriculum with Thai language as an extra subject.

Charoen Pokphand Group previously supported educational technologies to the centre and further taking care of the student’s hygiene. Meanwhile, Charoen Pokphand Foundation for Rural Life Development collaborates with international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to oversee their nutrition.

The Learning Center was initiated to allow the descendants of Burmese immigrants to Thailand to be educated and campaigned against drugs. Initially, the centre only opened for kindergarten to Grade 2, then with multiple supports, the school is now available until Grade 7.

In addition to classroom lesson, the centre encourages children to learn from activities such as laying hens and vegetable gardening so that they can apply what they have learned in their daily life.

Ajarn Peter, a Thai language teacher at the centre, said that the school has joined the project in 2016 with support from CP Foods that provide laying hens chickens, farming equipment, animal feed without charge in the first year. Currently, the school layer farm is raising 120 laying hens that produce fresh eggs for the lunch program.

Moreover, the project helps children and surrounding communities by distributing fresh eggs them during the COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand. Despite the school is being temporary closed due to the pandemic, teachers still taught students at home, bringing chicken eggs to students for their daily consumption.

Apart from having fresh, clean and healthy eggs, students also gained knowledge from real farming experience which can benefit their future careers. Many of them feel that participating in this project is fun and wanting to build their own egg farm for business.

The school’s teacher said that students at Ah Yone Oo are healthy thanks to the nutritious eggs. Meanwhile, the extra eggs have generated income to the school as they are selling it at 80-85 baht per 30 eggs. Other learning centers in the nearby areas also visited them to buy the eggs.

Ah Yone Oo Learning Centre is an example of Raising Layer for Student's Lunch’s accomplishment throughout the decades, which CP Foods, Charoen Pokphand Foundation for Rural Life Development and affiliate networks Strive together to contribute to food security for schools in the country.
